Going Big

It’s been a looooong time since I painted really, really large art pieces, but over the last few months I’ve been commissioned to do just that.

Here’s the painting hanging in its new home. Its “backstory” is framed on the right.

Confession: It’s been a blast to do this!

The first one was an abstract acrylic on hardboard for dear friends Keith and Christy who were opening a new office for their business. They wanted a 4x6 painting and gave me parameters of specific brand colors along with meaningful words, phrases, images, dates, and numbers to be incorporated into the painting.

I used a lot of layering techniques and incorporated an image of a large compass they requested, all to help tell their story visually. When I explained the backstory on the painting process and why I made the color and placement decisions along the way, they asked me to write it down. It is now framed and hanging beside the painting. :-)

This project was so exciting for me to do because I had the freedom to take a bunch of random elements, mix them together, and create something to express Keith and Christy’s story. It was a lot like cooking without a recipe and I liked the result- so did they.

It was great fun to attend their grand opening reception and see the piece hanging in its new home!

They wanted an additional, coordinating piece for another part of their office space. This one was a bit smaller (2x4) and painted on aquabord.

That’s the official “artist’s laughing happy face” when you’re delivering a finished painting to the framer!

This companion piece was mixed media - watercolor and acrylic - created with more of a pouring than a painting method. I was trying to achieve the look of something organic, like water and/or minerals, and was pleased with the way it turned out.

I’m hoping for more big projects to paint this year! :-)

If you need something along these lines, let’s talk!

Debbie
