I was raised on the Southern tradition of taking food to people who are hurting. In homes where there has been a death or a surgery or an emotional blow, meal planning is often the last thing on the mind of a family or individual in pain.
That’s why I keep these three items on hand in my kitchen:
1- Krusteaz Cinnamon Crumb Cake– It’s a quick and tasty coffee cake
2- Sliced Almonds- As a little creative twist, I add a cup of these to the coffee cake to “dress it up” a bit, reserving 1/4 cup to sprinkle on the top
3- Aluminum foil pans with lid (8×8)- “Real” dishes are a wonderful touch, but for a family weighed down by pain I don’t want to add return Debbie’s dishes to their “to do” list.
By keeping these three items on hand in my kitchen, within about an hour I can deliver a delicious breakfast coffee cake to their door. If time allows, I sometimes I pick up my favorite orange juice, Simply Orange, for them as well.
The wonderful food shared with my family in Tuscaloosa after my dad’s death this summer was very helpful to us in our season of grief. Try keeping these three simple items on hand in your kitchen and you may be able to be a blessing to a friend in need one day as well.
