My friend, Mike, did not know what he was starting the day he came bounding across the Quad at the University of Alabama and put a colorful little gift book in my hand.
I was in the midst of a tough week, overwhelmed by a boat load of tests. To cheer me up, Mike went to a bookstore and bought me a copy of a book entitled “Faith Is” by Pamela Reeve. (That’s my dog eared copy in the photo above.)
By today’s standards, it was pretty primitive. No fancy-schmancy graphic design, just hand written statements about what faith is, printed on colorful paper and bound with a gold plastic spiral.
I’m such a color lover that just seeing the book brought a smile to my face.
What’s funny is that I was hooked by the happy colors which drew me right into the words. Pamela’s simple sentences gave hope and encouragement to this young girl’s heart that day.
I’ve hung on to this book for over thirty years. Why? It was more than a book. It was the seed of a dream.
While at a Christian Booksellers Association (CBA) convention (now known as the International Christian Retailers Association or ICRS) several years ago, I learned that “Faith Is” was one of the original Christian gift books.
I liked the idea that a simple, colorful little book could invite people to open the pages and find encouragement. I’ll explain the l—o—n—g process I went through for the book to become a reality in another post, but for now, I want you to remember this…
Your words have the power to birth creative dreams in other people.
Not only were the words of the book powerful in my life, but what Mike wrote inside the back cover still resonates in my soul. You can read it here for yourself:
Whenever I look at “Faith Is” on my shelf, I remember how God used Mike’s kind gesture and words to plant the seed for my dream of writing a gift book one day.
“One day” has finally arrived! Now that my gift book, “Hope Is Always Near,” is in print, my prayer is that my book will, likewise, lift the spirit of some other person in the same way.
Never forget that your words can plant seeds for dreams in other people.
The Pondering Palette: How have your dreams been kindled by kind words and gestures of others? Is there someone in your circle of friends whose dreams you could encourage today?
PS My first book signing is Saturday, March 29, 2014 in Amarillo from 2-4 at the Lone Star Room of First United Bank. If you live in the area you and your friends are invited! If you live outside Amarillo and want to schedule a book signing, please contact me and we will try to set up an event.
